Approximately 70% of legislation affecting European Member States comes directly from the European Parliament and therefore it is crucial that Northern Ireland local government is represented in the heart of Europe.
Our European work aims to ensure that the interests and rights of local government are not only safeguarded but also advanced by EU policy and legislation.
Key to our work is the ability to effectively forecast funding opportunities and policy development and to influence the European Parliament at the legislative stage.
EU Priorities 2011
Every year the European Commission proposes a detailed work programme for the following year, comprising both legislative proposals (directives, regulations etc.) and non-legislative proposals (action plans, consultative papers etc).
