NILGA and SOLACE representatives provided evidence to the Regional Development Committee on un-adopted roads on Wednesday 18th January 2012. The delegation consisted of NILGA President, Cllr Evelyne Robinson, Vice-Presidents Cllr Dermot Curran and Ald Arnold Hatch and Mr David McCammick, Chief Executive of Antrim Borough Council.
The local government delegation highlighted problems experienced by Councils when roads had not been adopted by DRD Roads Service, including difficulties surrounding bin collection, public health and delivering council services in these areas such as the dog warden service and litter enforcement.
NILGA and SOLACE provided a number of recommendations to the Committee, including holding a full inquiry into the issues and impact of un-adopted roads in Northern Ireland and extending measures to protect the consumer when purchasing a property with adjoining un-adopted roads.
The Regional Development Committee thanked NILGA for the evidence provided. The Committee then formally agreed to hold a full inquiry into un-adopted roads. This work is being prioritised by the Committee and it is anticipated that a draft Terms of Reference for the inquiry will be presented to Committee at the next meeting.
NILGA is pleased to see such a practical and positive outcome in providing this evidence. It is now hoped that all relevant stakeholders can work together in attempt to resolve this issue for the citizens we collectively serve.
