Local Development Plans

The 11 councils in Northern Ireland are embarking on a new council-led local development plan process with great enthusiasm. This new responsibility, linked to the (also new) council-led community plan, presents great opportunities for local areas, people and businesses.

The new plan led system was introduced in the Planning Act 2011, but didn’t come into force until 2015, when the planning function was transferred to the new 11 councils.  The new system is designed to speed up plan making, deliver more effective stakeholder engagement and public participation and to provide a faster, more responsive approach that is capable of faster review.

The links currently provided in this section focus on the development plan process, how it relates to the Regional Development Strategy, Community and Transportation Plans,  as well as consideration of environmental responsibilities and the need to provide affordable housing.
