Department for Regional Development - £4.3million ‘Active Travel’ Council Investment

Today NILGA enthusiastically welcomed the announcement by Regional Development Minister Danny Kennedy MLA that he has awarded a £4.3million investment package to four local councils to promote Active Travel Demonstration Projects.

All councils in Northern Ireland were invited to submit proposals for the competition which focused on funding a local area scheme that would develop and advance active travel such as walking and cycling.

Successful proposals were received by Belfast City Council, Craigavon Borough Council, Derry City Council and Strabane District Council.

NILGA was actively involved in the policy development for the Active Travel Strategy and advised the Department for Regional Development in their creation of the competition, ensuring that demonstration projects would cover both cities and the more rural areas.

Speaking today, Derek McCallan, NILGA Chief Executive said: “We are delighted that four councils submitted successful proposals for this competition, I would like thank Minister Kennedy MLA for his acknowledgement of the vital role played by councils in joining up policy at local level.  I would hope that the collaborative approach taken by the Department to this project is an encouraging precursor to future partnership working within the forthcoming community planning process.”
