Ulster in Bloom
"Ulster in Bloom" is Irelands longest standing community gardening competition. It's organised by NILGA and sponsored by Translink and Northern Irelands Tourist Board.
The areas that are involved in the Ulster In Bloom are assesed over the summer months by a dedicated team of judges and horticultural experts.
The competition aims to improve and enhance the townscapes and environment of Northern Ireland through the imaginative use of trees, shrubs, flowers and landscaping besides sweeping away eyesores of litter, graffiti, vandalism and dog fouling etc. Condition and suitability of street furniture is taken into account, as well as efforts in conservation, recycling and publicity.

30 Years as Ulster in Bloom co-ordinator
2009 marks the 30th year of Ken Powles in the post of Ulster in Bloom Co-ordinator. At the Northern Ireland Local Government Association AGM which was held in the Guildhall Derry/Londonderry on Friday 18th September 2009. Our new president, Councillor John Mathews an Alliance Councillor from Larne Borough Council, presented Ken Powles with a gift to recognise his 30th year as co-ordinator of Ulster in Bloom. The gift was inscribed with the message “Presented to Ken Powles In recognition of 30 years service to Ulster in Bloom on behalf of NILGA, Translink and the NI Tourist Board”.

2009 Competition
The 31st year of the prestigious annual competition attracted 169 entries demonstrating an enduring passion for horticulture across local cities, towns, villages, amenities, businesses, bus and rail stations.Judging took place in July and August 2009. A full list of winners is below:
