Digital Councillor

Digital Councillor

The future of local government in Northern Ireland is digital. We are on the brink of a transformation that will reshape how councils and councillors engage with and serve their communities, providing services that are faster, smarter, and more inclusive.

Digital transformation is no longer a luxury; it is a necessity. This is more than a technological upgrade; it's a fundamental reimagining of governance aimed at empowering citizens, improving efficiency, and building resilient, future-ready councils.

Digital Updates for Councillors

Our digital updates are developed to keep councillors informed about the latest advances in various areas. These updates include important news, information about upcoming and ongoing local and national initiatives, essential policy changes, key dates, and access to relevant training opportunities. By delivering timely and comprehensive information in a convenient digital format, we aim to support councillors in their decision-making, community engagement, and ongoing professional development.

  • Fibrus Update - May 2026

On 13 May, NILGA and Fibrus hosted a webinar for councillors on full fibre broadband rollout in Northern Ireland, focusing on rural connectivity, community impact and how elected members can raise awareness and support uptake.

    Key updates

    • Fibrus confirmed its network now covers more than 450,000 premises across NI.
    • Project Stratum was highlighted as a major publicly funded programme that brought full fibre to more than 81,000 premises across NI.
    • Project Gigabit will extend gigabit-capable broadband to more than 9,000 rural premises, with delivery underway after the contract award in late 2025.
    • Speakers also outlined how rollout uses a mix of existing infrastructure and new build where needed.

    Why this matters

    • The webinar highlighted how better broadband supports remote working, business growth, farming innovation and rural competitiveness.
    • Fibrus also highlighted funding opportunities for local groups and the wider benefits of better digital connectivity.

    Councillor feedback

    • Councillors asked for more local data, clearer timelines and reassurance about disruption from infrastructure works.
    • They also called for better customer communication and clearer routes for constituency queries.

    Support for elected members

    • Fibrus outlined how elected representatives can check coverage, raise queries and escalate issues where needed.
    • A dedicated email for councillor enquiries was shared – elected_representatives@fibrus.com
