Community Spirit Blossoms as 2025 Translink Ulster in Bloom Competition is Launched

Northern Ireland’s cities, towns, and villages are bursting into flower once again as the 2025 Translink Ulster in Bloom competition was officially launched at the iconic Portrush Town Hall.

The highly anticipated annual awards, run in partnership between Translink and the Northern Ireland Local Government Association (NILGA), celebrates excellence in community gardening, sustainability, and environmental stewardship. The initiative honours the outstanding efforts of volunteers, local councils, community groups, and Translink staff who unite to transform shared spaces and champion biodiversity.

Speaking at the launch of this year’s competition, Frank Allen, Translink Chairman, said:

“At Translink, our mission is to support cleaner, greener communities across Northern Ireland. Ulster in Bloom perfectly captures the pride and commitment shown by people in every corner of our region—from rural villages to bustling cities.

“Each year, we’re inspired by the creativity and hard work behind these beautiful displays and eco-friendly green spaces. It’s especially encouraging to see sustainability and biodiversity now at the heart of so many entries.”

Cllr Frances Burton, speaking on behalf of NILGA, added:

“Ulster in Bloom doesn’t just brighten up our streets, it builds stronger communities, supports wellbeing, and promotes pride in place. Thanks to the ongoing partnership between NILGA, Translink, and our councils, this initiative continues to flourish and make a lasting impact.”

To mark this year’s Railway 200 celebrations, the 2025 Ulster in Bloom competition will introduce a special category celebrating Northern Ireland’s rich rail heritage. This new award will highlight the most imaginative horticultural displays or biodiversity features that reflect railway history—whether through themed gardens, pollinator zones, or the creative reuse of railway materials. These projects will not only echo the past but also inspire a greener, more sustainable future for passengers and communities alike.
