A new guide has been launched to support councillors in leading the drive for better digital connectivity in their local areas.
"A guide to digital connectivity for councillors in Northern Ireland” provides a clear and accessible overview of the key challenges and opportunities in expanding high-quality broadband and mobile infrastructure.
Developed by NILGA in partnership with the NI Barrier Busting Taskforce consisting of NI councils, NICS Departments, Ofcom, Department for Science, Innovation and Technology (DSIT) and Mobile UK, the guide highlights how connectivity can help create the conditions for economic prosperity, innovation and job creation, especially in rural or previously underserved areas. Without good connectivity, people are locked out of opportunity, especially older residents, low-income households, or those in remote areas.
Economy Minister, Dr. Caoimhe Archibald said: “Mobile connectivity across the north is critical to supporting economic development. I welcome the publication of this Guide to Digital Connectivity for local Councillors and put on record my thanks to the many stakeholders and Barrier Busting Taskforce members who have contributed to it. It is an important resource on the importance of digital infrastructure and connectivity as we work to deliver a globally competitive and sustainable economy, where everyone shares the benefits of prosperity.”
Welcoming the launch of the guide, NILGA President, Cllr Alison Bennington stated, “Digital connectivity is no longer a 'nice to have', it’s a critical enabler of opportunity, equality, and economic resilience in every community. This guide equips councillors to lead from the front on digital connectivity - turning ambition into action. The guide is part of a series of initiatives NILGA is undertaking to increase councillor understanding of digital innovations.
