NILGA COMMITS TO THE REAL LIVING WAGE

NILGA has announced its commitment to paying the Real Living Wage.

NILGA has announced its commitment to paying the Real Living Wage, becoming an accredited Living Wage Employer, and reaffirming its support for fair pay for staff within the local government sector.

The Real Living Wage is independently calculated based on the actual cost of living and is higher than the statutory minimum wage. By signing up, NILGA ensures that all directly employed staff, as well as regular contracted workers, receive a wage that meets everyday living costs.

This commitment reflects the organisation’s recognition of the vital role local government plays in supporting communities, delivering essential services, and sustaining local economies.

Councillor Billy Webb, NILGA President, stated: “Local government is at the frontline of supporting residents, families, and businesses, particularly during times of financial pressure. Paying the Real Living Wage is not just the right thing to do for our workforce; it strengthens local economies, improves job security, and supports the sustainability of public services. As an organisation working closely with local government, we believe fair pay should be the foundation of resilient communities.”

Accreditation as a Living Wage Employer demonstrates NILGA’s commitment to responsible employment practices and aligns with the growing number of councils and public sector bodies that champion fair pay as a driver of social value.

By adopting the Real Living Wage, NILGA joins a national movement of employers who recognise that investing in people yields long-term benefits for employers, workers, and local communities alike.
